In most sports you need good, reliable equipment and accessories in order to be successful and mountain biking is no different. If you are new to the sport and do not know where to start when it comes to choosing an appropriate bike and buying all other biking essentials, you need to do your research before parting with your cash.
You can virtually spend anything on the cost of a mountain bike, but spending above your capabilities could be a waste of money, while not spending enough may result in the bike not providing you with the support you need. It is widely agreed that £500 will secure you a good, quality mountain bike that will be able to sustain a good amount of off road use. You choice may also depend on the type of riding that you intend on doing.
If you have a decent sized budget try and purchase the best frame that you can afford. However, do not buy a frame that is too large as it could be an expensive mistake, so make sure that you get properly measured beforehand.
However, buying a bike is just half the job as you then need to think about what you are going to wear to protect yourself as no rider can claim to have never fallen off their bike, and if they have they are lying!
A helmet is vitally important and you should make sure that you only buy one which meets SNEL safety standards. Full face helmets are growing in popularity as they give your face that little bit of extra protection, and they literally could make the difference between life or death.
To keep out the cold during the winter wear synthetic clothing as it is less likely to weigh you down when it gets wet. A pair of gloves will also prevent your hands from getting frost bite or grazed when you take a tumble.
There are many other accessories you will require such as riding glasses, lycra shorts, mudguards and even waterproof socks.
Pop to your local bike shop for further advice as most staff will usually be riders themselves and will be able to pass on their expertise and recommendations.
